Answers to the most common questions about SolarGard architectural window film — from product selection and installation to government procurement and tax credits.

Product Selection

What is the difference between Solar Control film and Low-E film?

Solar control films primarily block solar heat and UV radiation by reflecting or absorbing solar energy. Low-E (low-emissivity) films, such as the SolarGard Ecolux 70, go further by also reducing heat loss in winter through a microscopically thin metallic coating that reflects interior radiant heat back into the room. For year-round energy savings in climates with both hot summers and cold winters, Low-E film is the superior choice.

What is the difference between Modern Misty Frost and Deep Etch decorative film?

Both films provide privacy and a refined aesthetic, but they differ significantly in appearance, light transmission, and ideal use case. The table below summarizes the key distinctions:

Feature Modern Misty Frost Deep Etch
Appearance Subtle, fine-grain sandblasted look Heavier, opaque acid-etched look
Privacy Level High (blurred shapes visible) Total (maximum obscurity)
Light Transmission High (bright, diffused light) Moderate (softer, reduced light)
Best Use Residential bathrooms, sidelights, office partitions Commercial conference rooms, executive offices, storefronts
Film Series SolarGard ByDesign Modern Misty Frost SolarGard ByDesign Modern Deep Etch

Which film is best for a school or government building?

For schools and government facilities where forced-entry deterrence and blast mitigation are priorities, we recommend SolarGard Sentinel Plus (exterior-grade safety film) or Stainless Steel series films, which provide the highest levels of glass-hold-in performance. These products are compatible with GSA procurement and may qualify for DHS/FEMA grant funding.

Government Procurement

Is The Window Place USA SAM-registered?

Yes. The Window Place USA is a SAM-registered vendor. Our CAGE Code is 52MH9 and our DUNS number is 807327700. Government agencies may purchase directly via P-Card or submit a formal purchase order. We support GSA SmartPay and can provide W-9, COI, and sole-source justification letters upon request.

Can government agencies purchase without a credit card?

Yes. We accept government purchase orders (Net 30 for approved agencies), P-Card (Visa/MC government purchase cards), and GSA Schedule orders. Contact us at inquiries@thewindowplaceusa.com or call (866) 274-2769 to initiate a procurement request.

Installation & Compatibility

Can window film be applied to Low-E glass?

It depends on the film type and the location of the Low-E coating. Certain high-absorption films can cause thermal stress on dual-pane (IGU) windows with interior Low-E coatings. Always use a Low-E detection meter before installation. See our Film-to-Glass Compatibility Guide for detailed guidance.

Does window film void my window warranty?

Most major window manufacturers have published film-compatibility policies. SolarGard films applied by a certified installer typically do not void window warranties when the correct film-to-glass pairing is followed. We provide manufacturer certification documentation with every order.

Tax Credits & Incentives

Does window film qualify for the federal energy tax credit?

Yes. Qualifying SolarGard Low-E window films (such as Ecolux 70) are eligible for the 30% Federal Energy Efficiency Tax Credit under Section 25C of the Internal Revenue Code, as extended by the Inflation Reduction Act. The credit applies to the cost of materials (not installation labor) and is capped at $1,200 per year. File IRS Form 5695 with your tax return. The credit is available for residential installations placed in service through December 31, 2032.
