How to Install SolarGard Window Film
Official SolarGard Installation Training Video
Tools and Materials You Will Need
- SolarGard window film roll (your chosen series and size)
- Spray bottle with application solution (1 drop of baby shampoo per quart of water)
- Hard card squeegee
- Soft squeegee or felt-edge squeegee
- Utility knife with fresh blades
- Straight edge / ruler
- Lint-free cloths or paper towels
- Tape measure
- Razor blade scraper (for cleaning glass)
Step-by-Step Installation Guide
Step 1: Prepare the Glass Surface
Clean the glass thoroughly using a razor blade scraper to remove any paint, adhesive, or debris. Spray the glass with application solution and squeegee clean. The glass must be completely free of dirt, dust, and oils for the film to adhere properly.
Step 2: Measure and Cut the Film
Measure the glass pane (width × height) and cut the film approximately 1 inch larger on all sides. This gives you trim allowance. Always cut on a clean, flat surface using a straight edge and sharp utility knife.
Step 3: Wet the Glass
Generously spray the glass with application solution immediately before applying the film. The glass must be wet — this allows you to reposition the film during application.
Step 4: Peel and Apply the Film
Peel the liner from the film while spraying the adhesive side with application solution. Apply the film to the wet glass, adhesive side down. If the frame is not perfectly square, overlay the film 1/4 inch on both sides of the window frame.
Step 5: Squeegee Out the Water
Starting from the center, use a hard card squeegee to push water and air bubbles toward the edges. Work in overlapping strokes. Use a soft squeegee for the final pass to avoid scratching the film surface.
Step 6: Trim the Edges
Using a straight edge and sharp utility knife, trim the film 1/16 inch from the window frame on all sides. This small gap prevents the film from peeling at the edges.
Step 7: Final Squeegee
Do a final squeegee pass from center to edges to remove any remaining water. Wipe the edges clean with a lint-free cloth.
Step 8: Allow to Cure
SolarGard window film requires a curing period of 30–60 days depending on climate and sun exposure. During this time, you may notice slight haziness or small water bubbles — this is normal and will disappear as the film cures.
Pro Tips
| Technical Specifications | |
|---|---|
| Work in shade or on overcast days — direct sunlight causes the application solution to dry too quickly | |
| Keep blades sharp — a dull blade drags and tears the film | |
| Do not apply in freezing temperatures — film adhesive does not bond properly below 40°F | |
| For large panes — have a second person help hold the film during application | |
| Clean tools between panes — debris on your squeegee will scratch the film |
